About

I just finished my M.S.C.E. in structures/construction after wrapping up my thesis on sustainability (www.greenroads.us) in December. I'm sticking around at the UW as a doctorate student, and I have a lot of great opportunities ahead. This quarter I'm working on developing a newly required CEE course in sustainability for the junior class. As a bonus, I will be teaching it in Spring 2009! This is a wonderful opportunity and I am really looking forward to it.

I have a professional background in both structural and geotechnical engineering and I'm currently a licensed P.E. in California and Washington. I am also a LEED-AP and spent sometime in the green building industry here in Seattle. It is likely a lot of my research will be focused in the building and construction sector for "being green;" e.g. what is sustainable, and what is not, and most importantly, what people actually mean when they make the claim that something is or is not sustainable.

My big areas of interest are sustainability, life cycle assessment (LCA) and carbon footprinting, and performance rating systems for buildings and infrastructure systems (like LEED and Greenroads). I am also leaning toward a focus on educational programs and awareness in the civil engineering discipline.

My current research is now directed towards course development for CEE360, and finishing up the first version (v1.0) of the Greenroads Rating System.

Outside of engineering and academics, I'm also involved in the UW Symphonic Band (principal bassoon) and the fitness phenomena called CrossFit (I'm a certified trainer).
